Preparing for a Reiki Session: A Guide to Maximizing your Healing Experience

How to settle your body and mind before receiving

Reiki is gentle work. It supports your body, mind, and nervous system in ways that aren’t always visible, but often felt. The more calm and open you are before a session, the easier it is for your body to receive the support it needs.

In my Sensory Reiki™ sessions, we work with energy, breath, touch, and the senses — so that your system can soften and return to a natural rhythm. You don’t need to do much to prepare. But a few simple choices can help you feel more settled going in.

1. Set a Simple Intention

This doesn’t need to be perfect. Just take a quiet moment and ask:

  • What would I like to feel more of?

  • What feels heavy or stuck right now?

You might say something like, “I’m open to feeling lighter,” or “I want to feel more grounded.” This is just a gentle way to arrive with awareness.

2. Keep It Light

Before your session, try not to eat a big meal — ideally nothing heavy for about two hours beforehand. It helps your body feel more open and relaxed.

If possible:

  • Drink water throughout the day

  • Eat clean, nourishing foods

  • Skip alcohol and limit caffeine

These small choices create more ease in your system.

3. Slow Down Before You Come

Even five minutes of quiet before your session can make a difference. Try:

  • Taking a short walk

  • Sitting with a cup of tea

  • A few slow breaths with your hand on your chest or belly

This gives your body a head start on softening.

4. Let Go of Pressure

You don’t need to have a big emotional release or any specific experience for Reiki to "work." Sometimes you feel things during the session. Sometimes you don’t. Both are okay.

Just come as you are, and let your body respond in its own way.

5. After the Session: Go Gently

Afterwards, give yourself a little time to settle. Some people feel lighter. Some feel emotional. Some feel quiet. All of it is normal.

Helpful ways to integrate:

  • Drink water

  • Rest if you can

  • Journal a few thoughts

  • Take a short walk or soak in a warm bath

You might also notice emotions or memories come up over the next few days. This is your system continuing to process and release. Go slowly. Trust the rhythm.

Reach Out If You Need Support

If something comes up after your session, you’re welcome to reach out. Healing doesn’t happen on a schedule. Sometimes you have questions later — and that’s okay.
